The Egyptian Racing Sighthound Association (ERSA) is DARPG's ONLY dog racing club and is open to everyone - as long as you own a sighthound, you're welcome to the races! ERSA hosts weekly RNG and biweekly effort races for both straight and oval tracks. Well accomplished racers can wrack up wins and points toward improving their racing Grade and earn titles that you cannot earn elsewhere.

Grab a muzzle and a jersey and we'll see you on the track!

Rules and Regulations

The Egyptian Racing Sighthound Association is open to everyone. Membership within CanisNudari is NOT a requirement (but helps keep you updated!)

All purebred sighthounds and named longdog mixes (like the American Staghound) are permitted. Please see our ERSA Accepted Breeds list to see which breeds qualify for our association. We currently accept all sighthounds, sighthound-like pariahs, and similarly built dogs from the pariah category. The only thing we will not accept is dogs with extreme fantasy elements and we do not permit the Rhodesian Ridgeback from racing due to its labeling as a scenthound with the FCI.
  • All entries made for ERSA must be unique. Do not reuse entries for different weeks and races.

  • Commissions are allowed but collaborations are only permitted for the RNG races.

  • You may register and compete with an unlimited amount of dogs.

  • Effort entries must be full body with at least a 3 element background (i.e. sky, ground, and tree). They will be judged on a point scale for CACIT certification.

  • Extra images drawn for the effort races will not increase your score.

Registration

All hounds participating in ERSA races must be first registered. Registered dogs will receive a small memento and a slip of paper (a comment) with their ID number on it which will need to be linked at future races. Dogs registered prior to April 2018 have certificates. These certificates remain valid.

Specific Racing Rules

  • At an official race meet, races may be offered for one or more breeds depending on interest.

    • In Effort-based Shows, all breeds will race together unless there are significant entries that warrant splitting up the breeds.

    • In RNG-based Shows, hounds will complete only against other hounds of the same breed.

  •  Hounds must be one (1) year of age or older to compete.
    • Some races will have differing age brackets including Maiden, Seniors, and Legends.

  • Starting box design or the use of an automatic slip device or hand-slipping is up to the individual artist.

  • Muzzles and jackets are required.

  • Racing jacket colors are SPECIFIC. Please see [this photograph] for reference.
    • Red = 1, Blue = 2, White = 3, Green = 4, Black = 5, Yellow = 6
    • Do NOT use the colors or patterns seen in Greyhound racing.
  • Muzzles can be of any type seen in Greyhound racing, plastic-coated English style, light-wire, or pelican style. The muzzle should not allow the hound to grasp the lure but the dog should be able to open his/her mouth at all times.
    • Muzzles made of heavy wire are dangerous and not permitted.

  • RNG race meets will consist of 3 races. Effort will be 1 high-point race.

  • Racers participating in multiple races within a meet will be rotated according to their score in the past race.

  • Hounds will receive a "grade" ranging from A (the fastest) to D (the slowest). Dogs in the same grade will race together.

  • A hound with no previous race record (after passing a qualifying race) starts in Grade D.

Types of Races

Sun Qualifying Races Sun

All dogs who are marked as a FTE (First Time Entered) must participate in a qualifying race.

Qualifying races are run via RNG-only.

The course is at least 200 yards with one turn if participating in Oval Track or 150 yards if participating in Straight Track. Dogs are scored between 1 and 100, with a passing roll being between 1 and 90. A dog with one pass is considered qualified to race in official races. A dog who rolls between a 91 and 100 will be marked DNF (Did Not Finish) and can participate in another qualifying race after twenty-four (24) real life hours have passed.

Sun Oval Track Races Sun

These races take place on a complete oval or U-Shaped track with at least 1 turn.

Oval Track races are run via RNG and Effort judging.

Tracks are rated based on distance: Short (200-300 yards), Medium (301-400 yards), or Long (400+ yards). Medium is considered the "standard distance". There is at least a forty-five (45) minute break in between races run at Medium and Long distances. A race consists of four dogs each for all breeds.
If RNG, dogs are required to race up against three real opponents of the same breed OR one ghost dog that will always place last.

Sun Straight Track Races Sun

These races take place over a straight stetch of even terrain with no turns.

Straight Track races are run via RNG and Effort judging.

Distances are listed in yards and come in three distances: 150 yards, 175 yards, or 200 yards. Straight Track racing consists of six dogs each for all breeds. If RNG, dogs are required to race up against five real opponents of the same breed OR ghost dogs who will always place last.

Sun High Point Races Sun

A race within a 3 race program between the four/six highest scoring racers
OR an Effort based meet consisting of only one race.

In terms of ERSA, the first race in a meet will always be a "High Point Race".
This type of race awards more points (hence the name), but is considerably more competitive.
Every dog who races in a High Point Race receives a small amount of points, even for last place. Due to the nature of effort based judging, all effort based shows are high point races.

Race Grading System

The objective of the Grading System is to match racers against each other by a point system based on racing ability. Racers are not divided by sex or any other factor (aside from breed). All racers shall have a Grade classification A, B, C, or D in the First Program of a meet using Graded Races. After each meet, each hound will have its Grade recalculated based on its performance.

Sun Initial Grading

A hound which has no previous race record at Official Race Meets starts in Grade D.

Sun Calculating WAVE

When a racer entered for an Official Race Meet has previously raced at an Official Race Meet, it will be graded based on its previous records. The weighted average (WAVE) for each dog is calculated by an admin with the following 3-meet score equations:

Three previous meets: [(Meet 1) +0.7(Meet 2) + 0.5(Meet 3)]
Two previous meets: [(Meet 1) + 0.7(Meet 2)]
One previous meet: score earned in that meet.

Sun Points Earned (over 3 Meets)

11.00 - 14.00 = Grade A
8.00 - 10.99 = Grade B
5.50 - 7.99 = Grade C
5.49 and below = Grade D
